What is the difference between voice-over and dubbing ?

What is Voice-over or V/O? Voice-over is of the descriptive style. There is no lip-sync in this, i.e.  an actor featured in the video has to do voice-over without paying attention to his lip movement . For a voice over artist, it is important to have a grasp of the language and have a clear pronunciation. Voice-over is often used in news-related segments, digital learning or documentary clips that are shorter and where translation is the primary objective, with  less emphasis on nuances of tone and sentimentality. Such as footage from in-the-field reporting, or conference proceedings.

Dubbing, also known as language substitution, is recorded by the dubbing artist and the audio track of the original video footage is mixed with alternate language recordings of dialogue. The choice of words is of utmost importance as the translated video needs to be synchronized with the lip movements of the actors on screen.

The specialty of a well-crafted dubbed film is that it does not go unnoticed by the audience as the dialogues are not spoken by the original actor. Because it’s actually an “acted out” voice recording that uses sound engineering and editing to make sure it sounds real. In this way the dubbing artist lip syncs and   makes the character come alive with his voice by creating emotion while speaking his dialogues .
