Difference Between Old and New Films- Old Vs New Films of Bollywood

Bollywood Hindi films and its music have always been the center of entertainment for the people. Earlier radio and films were the main means of entertainment. The contribution of Bollywood Hindi films to entertainment in the country   has always been remarkable.

From the time of its inception till now   , major changes have taken place in this mode of entertainment . Silent cinema started in India in 1913 with Dadasaheb Phalke’s film Raja Harishchandra. Then in 1931, the era of talkie films (talkies) began with Ardeshir Irani directed “Alam Ara”.

In the early stages of films, films used to be black and white for a long time. Later on, with the addition of color, the 35 mm to CinemaScope, 70 mm screen was changed and its expansion is still going on. Despite being technologically advanced, do today’s films touch the heart? Or  which one do people prefer between the old Bollywood  movies or the new  ones  of the present era ?

One answer to this would be that naturally the older generation would like the old films and the new generation would like the new films. But for which one should really choose between new or old movies, it is necessary to consider on the basis of the following points.

Difference Between Old and New Films

1. Composition of films –

In the old movies, the story was shot in a straight and simple way and the  films ended with a message,  but now you hardly remember a film with any message. The old  films had a structure made up of heroes, heroines, villains and comedians and the story was woven around them.

In earlier films, the comedian’s role was also equivalent to that of the hero and he was often the hero’s friend. Comedian Mehmood was in this category, whose  role  and  fees were  no less than a hero.

Earlier Nayak meant a man full of goodness and virtue, he used to do only good deeds. Villain means a person who smokes alcohol and cigarettes, exploits the poor and does all the bad things like smuggling, black marketing.

Old-time films used to have established villains like Pran, Ajit, Premchopada, Ranjeet, Madanpuri and Jeevan. The hero was shown fighting with these bad guys and at the end of the film, the hero would win.

Difference Between Old and New Film

The heroine  was also often shown to be virtuous, dressed in traditional Indian clothing. In earlier films, kissing was avoided in romantic scenes, such scenes were filmed through symbols (such as two roses meeting). Wearing modern clothes, showing cool looks was the job of villains like Sasikala and Bindu.

In today’s films, having  villains and comedians is no longer mandatory as before. Because today’s hero can also do negative role and does comedy  along with herogiri  . In the same way, the heroine can also do all the things that were done for the villain in the old films.

In today’s time, more experimental films are being made. One of the reasons for this is the multiplex culture making it easier to screen such films. Audi of multiplexes   gets filled with only  100-150 spectators , so  it is not a loss-making business even if the number of viewers watching experimental films is less. But earlier there used to be a single cinema of 1000-1200 seats, which was a loss-making deal for 100 spectators.

This does not mean that  experimental films were not made in the olden days. Such films  used to be made in the past as well. Sunil Dutt starrer “Yaadein”, Sanjeev Kumar  ‘s “Koshish”, B. R. There are many out-of-the-box films like Rajesh Khanna starrer “Ittefaq” produced by Chopra and “Insaf Ka Taraju” starring Raj Babbar.

In the 80-90s, directors like Shyam Benegal (films – Kalyug, Mandi, Trikaal) and Govind Nihalani (films – Aakrosh, Ardha Satya, Hazar Chaurasi Ki Ma) made films out of the box, which came to be called art film or art cinema. .

In the old days, films like Mother India, Mughle Azam, Awara, Do Bigha Zameen, Pyaasa were made which proved to be milestones in the history of Hindi films. These films are  still seen and liked and will be remembered even today. But today’s films are soon forgotten and do not leave their mark on the audience for long.

In the olden times, there have been veteran directors like   Vimal Roy,  Raj Kapoor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, V Shantaram and Guru Dutt. Film making was his passion  and he had a style of his own.  Without compromising on his style and art, he made films which  people not only appreciated but most of his films were also very much liked.

In the 80s and 90s, there was also a period of directors like Manmohan Desai whose films were only intended to entertain. Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish, Suhaag were such films, they were called masala films.

In this, the story was based on the “khoya-paya” formula, in which the separated brothers of childhood grew up in different places and eventually reunited  . Thus  the film had a happy ending. These films were multi-starrers, in which Amitabh Bachchan used to be a hero. Such films were extremely successful at the box office.

Talking about acting, the hero of old times used to have a style of his own and he was seen in the same complexion in most of the films. For example, due to tragic roles, Dilip Kumar’s name was called Tragedy King. Devanand Shahri was known for Babu style and Raj Kapoor was known for simple man or Charlie Chaplin style.

He was followed by superstar Rajesh Khanna, who had a romantic style of his own. Rajkumar and Shatrughan Sinha were famous for their dialogue delivery. People  used to go to the theater to listen to his dialogues and have fun with applause. There dialogues played a major role.  While Manoj Kumar was called “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic films, Amitabh Bachchan was called the “Angry Young Man” because of his roles.

There is no such image of the heroes of today, now according to the film, their weight is also adjusted to make the character look more believable. Acting ability is visible in most of the actors of today. For example, heroes like Manoj Bajpayee, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkumar Rao and character actors like Sanjay Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi, Annu Kapoor can be named.

Song music was of great  importance  in old films . We can say that the life of old films used to be his songs. Many films used to be successful only because of their melodious music. Due to the song music of the film, the audience used to be drawn towards the cinema hall.

The reason why so much magic was created in the songs was due to the melody of the musicians with the pen of lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Indeevar, which gave us such melodious melodies.

In the old days, Naushad, Khayyam, Ravi, O.P. Nayyar, S. There were virtuoso musicians like D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan who were adept at using classical music and ragas in their compositions. Mo. Singers like Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Asha Bhosle, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey added to those songs with their voice.

Listening to the songs of old films, people still shudder, their melodious music fills the mind with a feeling of immense joy. But the songs of today’s films get lost somewhere as they come. Now there is a glut of new singers and musicians, but heart touching songs are rarely heard these days, only a few songs in a year become like this.

In fact, today’s songs have become a thing to watch rather than listen, most of the songs are dance numbers based on Punjabi tunes. Nowadays, it has become a fashion to put Punjabi words in the song of the film’s character, be it from any region. Now there are modern recording rooms where the sound of different instruments can be extracted with the help of a single electronic device.

Earlier, the recording of songs was done in the studio with the singers taking the players as per the requirement. Before the final recording, a long time was spent in preparing the song, only then  it could become every heart’s beloved music, which made the heart happy to hear. In this way, in the matter of song music, the old films have the upper hand.

Earlier action sequences were not given that much importance. In the old movies, the audience used to hear the same familiar voice of Dishum ..Dishum with every punch in the fight of Hero and Villain which they had heard in the previous film also.

In the olden times, the film reels had to be delivered to the cinema hall before the film was screened, but now the film can be screened in the cinema houses of different cities from one place. The era of interruptions in watching movies due to reel cuts is over.

Promotion  of old films was  not done like nowadays  , in which the film team travels to different cities to promote and appear in popular TV shows . Earlier the film was promoted through radio and newspaper advertisements. Also film posters were put up in theaters and in prominent areas of the city. Earlier these big  posters were made by the painter, now flexes are put in its place.

In this way, something good happens in every round. Older films outshine with their melodious music while  newer Bollywood films are technically superior.

Amidst the trend of remakes of old movies and remixes of old songs,  some  of today’s directors are also coming up with new ones, in which  both diversity and  originality are being seen by the audience. Good for Hindi films, that they are doing this.
